Purpose

The Bayanihan (ba-yuh-nee-han) is a Filipino custom derived from the Tagalog word “bayan” for nation, town or community. Bayanihan literally means “being in a bayan” and it refers to a fundamental aspect of Filipino culture: working together as a community to achieve a common goal. The Pilipino Cultural Exchange wants to recognize exceptional students who demonstrate leadership and interests in community building and cultural awareness, regardless of their ethnic background.

Qualifications to Apply

  • Must be a paid member of the Pilipino Cultural Exchange at the time of application

  • Must be a student at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo

  • Must be a full-time student during Spring Quarter 2021

  • Must not have been a recipient winner of the a PCE COVID-19 Scholarship


Scholarship Application

Please provide a 500-800 word essay, answering any one of the three topics:

  • What aspect of PCE and/or other cultural orgs brought you a community within Cal Poly? 

  • Kapwa translates to “kindred”, “neighbour”, and “fellow humans”. How have you embraced your identity as a Kapwa to help others in your community?

  • Tell us a time where you have embraced the meaning of Bayanihan and have cooperated with others to achieve a common goal. 

Include in your essay the following:

  • Why is receiving this scholarship important to you?

Moving Forward

Applications will be reviewed by Executive Board (except Club Liaison) & PCE’s Club Advisors. When reviewed, scholarship applications will be anonymous to prevent the possibility of personal preference interfering in the selection process. Scholarship awardees will be contacted by Brian (Club Liaison) through email. Cal Poly ASI, Inc. and the Cal Poly Financial Aid Office will require the selected students to submit their EMPL ID to receive the award. If selected awardees have any outstanding balance due to Cal Poly, the award will be applied and any difference will be awarded as a check to the student.

Scoring Rubric for Essay Questions

0-10

  • Does not answer the question.

  • Does not note compelling evidence regarding how the Bayanihan impacted them & their community during their time at Cal Poly along with why receiving this scholarship is important. 

  • Does not reflect on ways in which we can continue supporting our communities/ or on their experience with being a kind neighbor to the community. 

  • Does not address financial need. 

  • Mechanical errors are abundant and distracting. 

11-20

  • Inconsistent focus.   

  • Notes little compelling evidence regarding how the topic of Bayanihan impacted them & their community during their time at Cal Poly.

  • Reflects little on ways we can continue supporting our communities/ or their experience with being a kind neighbor to the community. 

  • Addresses scholarship needs but does not provide any supporting examples related to merit or financial need. 

  • Mechanical errors interfere with understanding of essay.

21-30

  • Clear focus.

  • Notes moderate evidence regarding how the topic of Bayanihan impacted them & their community during their time at Cal Poly. 

  • Moderately reflects on ways we can continue supporting our communities/ or their experience with being a kind neighbor to the community.

  • Constructs an adequate case with sufficient examples to confirm scholarship need 

  • Few mechanical errors 

31-40 

  • Answers prompt with strong central focus.

  • Notes compelling evidence regarding how COVID-19 the topic of Bayanihan impacted them & their community during their time at Cal Poly. 

  • Thoughtfully reflects on ways we can continue supporting our communities/ or or their experience with being a kind neighbor to the community.

  • Constructs a clear and exceptional case, including appropriate examples for deserving or needing scholarship, and describes the impact scholarship would have on goals  

  • Minimal mechanical errors
